Media and Democracy is a key provider of services to the training initiatives of the Network for Enhanced Electoral and Democratic Support Project (NEEDS). The European Commission financed NEEDS Project trains cadre for the European Union’s international election observation missions from all 27 EU Member States as well as providing technical assistance to domestic election observer organisations around the world.

The objective is to enhance the professional quality of the EU’s technical assistance to democracies in partner countries. Through election observation the EU seeks to strengthen democratic institutions and help to deter fraud, intimidation and violence. Recommendations on improving the electoral process can be useful tools for national election administrations, domestic observers and international electoral assistance providers alike.

Support to Media during Electoral Processes

Gillian McCormack, Media and Democracy’s director, joined the BBC World Service Trust and International IDEA in organising a workshop on media assistance during elections, held in London on 18—19 March 2010, which brought together leading actors in the fields of media support and electoral assistance. The experts attending evaluated current media support during elections and created a report with general and very specific recommendations for donors, media assistance and electoral support organisations to improve their impact.

The final report and a short summary of the recommendations is available on our publications page.
